Manarat Al-Islam: accurate prayer times for your city

Prayer is the pillar of the religion, and Allah says: “Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at specified times” (An-Nisa 4:103). Each of the five daily prayers begins and ends with a clear astronomical sign, so Muslims everywhere look up the time of the adhan every day. Many websites and apps only show the times of capitals or of the nearest large city, yet the difference between two cities of the same country can reach many minutes, which matters for Fajr before sunrise and for suhoor and iftar in Ramadan.

That is why Manarat Al-Islam gives every city its own page: 32,047 cities in 243 countries, from the capitals to towns of about fifteen thousand people. Each page shows today’s prayer times with a countdown to the next prayer, a full monthly timetable, a seasonal table explaining how the times change between summer and winter, the Qibla direction with the distance to Makkah, and estimates of the fasting hours in Ramadan.

How are prayer times calculated?

The five prayers follow the position of the sun. Fajr begins with true dawn, when the sun is between 12 and 20 degrees below the eastern horizon depending on the method. Dhuhr begins just after the sun passes its highest point. Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals its length plus its noon shadow for the majority of scholars, or twice its length for the Hanafis. Maghrib begins when the sun has completely set, and Isha when the evening twilight disappears, or a fixed time after Maghrib in some calendars such as Umm al-Qura.

To calculate these moments we need three things: the latitude and longitude of the place, the date, and the official time zone. We take the coordinates of every city from the open GeoNames database, request the times from the AlAdhan service and compute the same values in your browser, so the times appear immediately and stay available without a connection. Daylight saving time is applied automatically wherever it is used.

Calculation methods around the world

There is no single worldwide method for Fajr and Isha: every authority has its own, based on observation and practice. For each country we use the method closest to its official or most common calendar, and you can change it on any page. The table below shows the main methods used on the site; you will find a detailed explanation on the page prayer time calculation methods.

Why do times differ within the same country?

The sun reaches its highest point in the eastern cities of a country before the western ones, about four minutes earlier for every degree of longitude, even when the whole country shares one clock. Latitude matters too: the further from the equator, the longer the summer days and the shorter the winter days, so Fajr comes much earlier in summer in northern cities. In countries close to the poles, twilight can last all night in summer; there we apply the standard high-latitude rule so that Fajr and Isha always have a usable time.

Qibla and Ramadan for every city

Next to the daily times, every page gives the Qibla direction in degrees from true north with a compass drawing, and the great-circle distance to the Kaaba. We also estimate the time of imsak and iftar and the number of fasting hours on the first and last day of Ramadan, so you can prepare early. The official start of the month is always announced by the religious authorities of each country after the sighting of the crescent.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the prayer times come from?

We fetch the times from the AlAdhan service using the coordinates of each city and the method used in its country, and we run the same astronomical calculation in your browser so the times appear instantly and remain available offline.

Why does the time differ by a minute or two from my mosque?

Some authorities add a few minutes of precaution to some prayers, and mosques often round the time. You can change the calculation method or the Asr school in the settings of any page.

Is the site free?

Yes. Manarat Al-Islam is free, needs no account and works on phones and computers. You can add your city’s page to your home screen to open it in one tap.

My city is not listed. What can I do?

We cover cities with about 15,000 inhabitants or more, plus every capital. Open the page of the nearest city: between two close places the difference is usually only a minute or two.
