Prayer times by region in Sri Lanka

Our pages in Sri Lanka are organised in 9 regions. Choose your region, then your city: each page has its own coordinates, so the times differ by a few minutes from one place to the next, from east to west and north to south.

How prayer times are calculated in Sri Lanka

Pages for Sri Lanka use the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method: Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon and Isha when the sun is 18° below the horizon. Times are shown in local time (UTC+5:30). In the capital Colombo, Fajr is about 4:40 AM and Maghrib 6:28 PM around 21 June, while around 21 December Fajr comes at 5:02 AM and Maghrib at 6:00 PM. Daylight there ranges from 11 h 43 min to 12 h 32 min.

Our cities in Sri Lanka stretch from Chilaw in the west to Kalmunai in the east, and from Valvettithurai in the north to Devinuwara in the south. With such a distance, the sun reaches its zenith in Kalmunai about 8 minutes before Chilaw, even though the clock is the same everywhere. Day length also differs between north and south, most of all in summer and winter, so the timetable of Colombo cannot replace that of your own city.
